2004 Chevrolet SSR

50 Cars for 50 Years – Spotlight #16

Ready for a retro-inspired convertible pickup truck? Then look no further than the 2004 Chevrolet SSR! Short for Super Sport Roadster, The Chevy SSR started as a concept car by General Motors, but has become beloved by #collectors for being a mashup of a muscle car and a pickup truck. As Berkley One Classics celebrates the big 5-0, we’re hosting an exciting virtual car show for collectors and enthusiasts alike. We’ll share our love of classic cars by spotlighting 50 cars for 50 years that have been chosen and beloved by our employees. Each will showcase the evolution of design and engineering and provide a nostalgic journey through auto and pop culture history. Read on as Brian Zahn, Berkley One Underwriting Team Lead, tells us why he loves Chevrolet SSR.

The Car

The Chevrolet SSR (Super Sport Roadster) is a retro-inspired convertible pickup truck designed by General Motors as a concept car. Revealed at the 2000 Detroit auto show, the Chevrolet SSR came factory standard with a power retractable top, power windows, keyless entry and leather trimmed bucket seats.

Options included cast-aluminum wheels and teak decking on the bed for a unique retro look. The 2003-4 model used a 5.3 Liter, 300 horsepower engine, allowing the SSR to accelerate 0-60 in 7.7 seconds. The automatic transmission was standard, but a six-speed manual was available as an option.

The Collector

The look of the SSR was inspired by Chevrolet’s Advance-Design trucks of the late 1940s and 1950s. Fewer than 25,000 Chevrolet SSRs were produced between 2003 and 2006. A striking retro look combined with a modern drivetrain and limited production makes the SSR a desirable addition to any collection.

The Love

This is a unique vehicle that drives conversation. It’s a mashup of a muscle car and a pickup truck and handles both responsibilities admirably. It is rare enough that it warrants looking at it if you happen to pass one on the highway.
