“Whether it’s a personal garage, a rented unit, or a facility, your insurance policy likely requires that the vehicle be stored in a structured building that can be locked,” Doc explains. He emphasizes that the area should be monitored or otherwise protected against unauthorized entry to reduce the risk of theft or vandalism. Reviewing your policy is also key to ensuring your chosen storage method meets coverage requirements. If your car is parked in a space accessible to others, or in a facility with a history of break-ins, you may not qualify for protection.

Climate Control for Preservation

Once the structure and location are safe, consider climate-controlled garages to store your car. Climate controlled garages are ideal for collector vehicles because they regulate temperature and humidity, helping to preserve paint, upholstery, and mechanical components. They also offer an added benefit: preventing damage from rodents. “Rodents are a real issue, and many policies don’t cover damage caused by them,” Doc warns. To protect your car, seal off the exhaust pipe and air intakes, remove any food or organic materials from the interior, use traps or deterrents in the garage, and consider elevating the vehicle with a lift or jack stands to reduce access points.

Fire and Flood Safety Precautions

Fire risk is also often overlooked when planning vehicle storage. “Some people leave batteries on trickle chargers, which can catch fire if not monitored,” Doc says. To reduce the risk, remove the battery entirely and store it safely, keep the garage free of flammable materials such as paint cans, fuel, and oily rags, and ensure proper ventilation while considering the installation of a fire extinguisher or suppression system. “Simple common sense goes a long way,” Doc adds. “Clutter can become a hazard. Shelves stacked with chemicals or tools can quickly turn a safe space into a risk zone.”

Next, if you live in a flood prone area, elevation is your best defense. “Lifts are great because they get the car off the ground and make more space,” Doc notes. Avoid storing vehicles in basements or low-lying garages, check local flood maps and drainage systems, and have a backup plan in place so you know where to move your car if a storm, hurricane, or hail event is approaching. Being proactive can make all the difference between a safe season and costly damage.

Winterizing and Final Preparations

Winterizing your classic car is also essential as cold weather introduces unique challenges. Doc recommends adding a fuel stabilizer to prevent degradation, topping off fluids and checking antifreeze levels, and covering the car with a breathable, weather resistant cover to protect it from the elements while allowing moisture to escape. Finally, document the vehicle’s condition with photos before and after storage.
