1967 Chevrolet Chevelle SS

50 Cars for 50 Years – Spotlight #21

The 1967 Chevrolet Chevelle SS396 L78 is a classic, and rare, muscle car. Although more than 60,000 were built, less than 700 were optioned with the ultra-high performance L78 package. Simply put, it’s a treasured, collectible model. As Berkley One Classics celebrates the big 5-0, we’re hosting an exciting virtual car show for collectors and enthusiasts alike. We’ll share our love of classic cars by spotlighting 50 cars for 50 years that have been chosen and beloved by our employees. Each will showcase the evolution of design and engineering and provide a nostalgic journey through auto and pop culture history. Read on as Kevin Vezina, Berkley One Classics Agency Experience Manger, tells us why he loves the 1967 Chevrolet Chevelle SS396 L78.

The Car

This is a classic American muscle car. The 1967 Chevelle SS396 2-door coupe model features the L78 396ci engine with an 11:1 compression ratio and aluminum high rise intake topped with a Holley carburetor. The engine produced 375 horsepower and was mated to a 4-speed Muncie M21 manual transmission. Black on black vinyl interior and wheels fitted with red pin stripe tires were popular options.

The Collector

Although more than 60,000 1967 Chevelle SS’s were built, less than 700 were optioned with the ultra-high performance L78 package which makes this a very rare and collectible model. The ’67 Chevelle Super Sport is the last of the First Generation (1964-1967) cars in the Chevelle line up. The Chevelle SS396 is a very desirable car in the Chevy collector world and the L78 version is the most desirable of the Chevelle SS396 models.

The Love

I have been a Chevelle fan since I was 16 years old. My first car was a 1970 Chevelle Malibu 350. I like this car mainly because of the design. The bucket seat interior and full instrument panel provides a hot rod look, while the exterior maintains a “sleeper” look. The overall stock stance and stock features still say, “Cool Car.” The 67 L78 will always be my dream car.
