Today’s top devices for home protection and security
The latest in cutting-edge home tech
The world of technology is growing fast, bringing with it groundbreaking innovations across sectors at top speed. The home market is no exception, featuring several new products enhancing everyday life—including many that speak specifically to the topic of home protection and security. Here, Berkley One VP of Risk Management Amanda McComas shares three types of devices on the market that are receiving significant revamps and redesigns, reflecting today’s ever-evolving tech landscape and helping to keep our homes secure.
Water Shutoff Devices
Water damage is the leading cause of homeowners insurance losses, so it’s important to take proactive steps to help safeguard your home against these scenarios—from frozen or leaking pipes to appliance malfunctions. Installing a smart water shutoff system is beneficial for every homeowner, especially those who are managing two residences and spending time away from each. McComas notes that there are two types of water shutoff installations—flow-based and sensor-based—and recommends a flow-based system for its ability to monitor water flowing through all pipes of the house (as opposed to a sensor-based system that detects water only by the time it reaches a sensor).
“If there is an abnormal rate of flow, a flow-based system can shut off the water before you have an issue,” notes McComas.
“That timing can make a significant difference because even a small, continuous leak can cause severe home damage.”
McComas adds that most systems today are equipped with smartphone technologies, allowing users to monitor and control their water remotely. These apps also give homeowners the ability to keep an eye on their overall water consumption.
Alarm Systems
Alarm systems are becoming more intelligent. Many now feature comprehensive security considerations and easy integration into smart home systems. These systems connect a home’s smart devices and technology. Security cameras are debuting with higher quality footage and helpful alerts, including the ability to differentiate motion among people, animals, and vehicles. Video doorbells are also being made with more sophisticated design, with intelligent motion detection and often featuring HD or 2K video and a wide field of view. All of this helps give homeowners reliable, real-time information behind any activity at the door.
“Video doorbells can help to deter burglaries from happening,” says McComas. “They help provide an extra layer of visibility/line of sight.”
Smart locks can offer added security, too, thanks to features like facial recognition and fingerprint-required entry, as well as conveniences like the ability to unlock from anywhere or grant remote access to friends and neighbors. Some smart locks are sold together with video doorbells—and those looking for a full front door security boost (and who prefer the look of a glass entry) can check out smart glass, a technology that morphs the glass of a front door from clear to frosted with a voice-controlled app. Those looking to further protect a glass door entry (or any home windows) can consider installing a glass break sensor, which triggers an alarm and sends phone alerts when it detects broken glass.
“A glass break sensor is a great idea if you have a large wall of windows because you have one detector in the room, and it triggers the alarm when it hears any breaking window,” says McComas. “These sensors are particularly handy when you have many windows throughout the house but can’t realistically sensor every single one of them.” It also helps that most security systems today notify homeowners of any suspicious indoor movement, if a door or window is open, or of variance in indoor temperature. Have these systems installed professionally and if you opt to enroll with their offered monitoring plan, then their team of professionals—rather than you and your family—keep an eye on your home’s security around the clock.
Smart Generators and New Home Back-Up Systems
Generators are a wise home purchase, especially for those who travel frequently or are looking for ways to further protect multiple residences. When a home loses power, a generator can help to keep your systems afloat, including your security alarms, appliances, and heat (helping to prevent burst pipes and any related water damage). While a traditional generator is a sound starting point, many are now looking to models with updated design, including automation features, synchronicity across devices, and app-driven operating technology (such as remote power on and off functions and the ability to input tank size to determine varying propane levels).
Homeowners are also starting to seek out solar generators over gas generators, many enjoying that these new variations are quieter, environmentally friendlier, and require less maintenance. There have also been some big changes to the home back-up power system space, altogether. “These generator alternatives use solar energy or energy from the grid, rather than gas or propane,” says McComas. “They operate just like a back-up system but are powered differently.” Regardless of the system you choose, be sure to speak with a professional for help navigating installation, use, and maintenance to help ensure all features are operating safely and effectively.
